The Certificate and Diploma Awards

The Bishop’s Certificate and Diploma in Theology for Ministry are offered by the Newcastle School of Theology for Ministry and awarded by the Bishop of Newcastle. The Bishop is advised by the Board of the School about those participants who have attained the required level for an award. Whilst the Board  safeguards the standards of the Bishop’s Certificate and Diploma, the programmes do not have national accreditation. Credit will therefore not necessarily be granted to you if you seek to transfer to tertiary-level institutions for further study.

Accreditation for Ministry

The ministry skills streams aim to provide ongoing formation for those already active in a particular ministry area, or to introduce you to a ministry which you might later explore in a parish or sector ministry. The successful completion of the Bishop’s Certificate or Diploma, or a ministry skills streams does not in itself qualify you to engage in forms of ministry which require a licence or authorisation within the Diocese.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Every request for recognition of prior learning is considered by the Director on an individual basis. The central principle in assessing requests is that no one should undertake studies which they have already completed in another programme. If you have completed courses which cover the same content as courses within the Bishop’s Certificate or Diploma programme you are invited to apply for exemption from the requirement to undertake them for a second time. If you are applying for recognition of prior learning please include details when you make your application. You may be asked to submit proof of satisfactory completion after you have made your application.
